About Step Into Stability

Hello — I’m Jason. I made everything in this shop myself.

If you are here because of gambling, I have a good idea of where you are standing.

I lost fifteen years to it. I am not going to pretend I know your life — but I know the three in the morning of it, the lying, the maths you do in your head all day. If any of that just landed, you are in the right place and you can stop holding your breath.

What it did to me

It took hold of me quietly, the way it always does. The money was devastating, and the money was not the worst of it. The worst of it was watching myself come apart — the shame I woke up with every single day, the pretending I was fine, the sound of my own voice lying to people who had done nothing wrong. I lost people I loved. Some of them I have not got back, and I have had to learn to carry that.

I was unwell in ways I did not have words for at the time. I thought I was a bad person who kept doing a bad thing. What I actually was, was an ill person who had nowhere to put any of it down. If that is where you are tonight, I want you to hear it from someone who has been there: you are not a lost cause, and this is not the end of your life.

What was underneath it

There was an accident, years before any of this, and the fracture in my back was missed. I lived on top of it for fifteen years without knowing what it was — the same fifteen years I was gambling. When it was finally found, the damage was severe enough to need surgery.

The surgery has left me with neurogenic disease affecting my bladder and my stomach, and that is what I live with now. By then I had already lost my family, my home, and everything I had. Mental pain and physical pain both leave you lost and barely going, and I could never have told you which one was driving. I am getting going again from there, and some of what I write from now on will be about physical pain as much as about gambling.

The day it turned was not the day I stopped. It was the day I believed I was allowed a different life.

It was not quick and it was not tidy, and I still have days that wobble. But it was possible — and it started with something as ordinary as writing the day down on a piece of paper, where it could not follow me around my head all night. Everything in this shop grew out of that one small habit.

What I was trying to make for you

Somewhere to put it down

What I needed was not more advice. It was a quiet page that did not flinch, that I could tell the truth to on a day that had gone badly, and that asked nothing else of me.

Nothing to fail at

Every journal is undated on purpose. Miss a week, miss a month, come back after a relapse — there is no empty date staring at you. You just start on the page you open. Nothing in here keeps score.

Nobody has to know

You print it at home, as often as you like. No parcel turns up, no app, no login, nothing on the kitchen table to explain. Your statement says Step Into Stability and nothing else. I built it that way because I remember needing that.

I will be here

This is not a company with a support desk. It is me, at a kitchen table, and I read every email that comes in. If you write to me, I will write back — usually the same day, and always as a person rather than a policy.

You do not have to buy anything to write to me. Plenty of people email having bought nothing at all, just to say it out loud to someone once. That is a completely fine reason to use my address, and it will go no further than me.

hello@stepintostability.com — whatever it is, and however badly written. I have heard worse, and most of it was mine.

Being honest with you

I am not a therapist, and I am not a brand pretending to care. I am one person who lived this. I am clean now, and I am still learning it — I know the symptoms it produces and I do not think you ever stop watching for them. What I wanted to make was something that could sit beside somebody walking the same road. These are journals, not treatment, and they are no substitute for real help — if you need that, please ring the number below before you buy anything from me.

Wherever you are — day one, or year two, or back at the start again after a bad weekend — you are welcome here, and you are not behind. If any of this reaches one person on the night they needed it, it will have been worth every page I wrote.

Free, any hour, and they have heard it all before — including the bit you think is unforgivable. Ringing them is an ordinary, unremarkable thing to do, and I wish I had done it years earlier than I did.

Start with the free page

A real page out of the 120-page journal, given away whole, because you should not have to trust a stranger with money to find out whether he is any use to you. Take it, print it, and if you never come back that is fine too.
